DCB Owners Enjoy a Winning Regatta

$

Between clientele who have been to every one and those attending their first gathering of Dave’s Custom Boats owners, the consensus was the same for the ninth annual DCB Regatta in Lake Havasu City, Ariz., at the end of September. Another winner.

DCB owners Rob Blair and Dave Hemmingson welcomed more than 50 enthusiastic customers to the Nautical Beachfront Resort for the Friday night kick-off party following a day of registration and fun outings to places such as Pirate Cove Resort and Havasu Springs Resort.

On Saturday, the helicopter photo shoot, lunch stop, raft-ups and other activities kept boaters busy from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Then, embracing the all-sports tailgate theme, quite a few regatta participants went all-out at the banquet sporting their favorite team jerseys or, if you’re Brandon Allen, your favorite team from a movie—the Average Joe’s from “Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story.”

Allen, who lives in San Diego and owns Lime Time, a 2002 F34 catamaran with twin Mercury Racing HP525EFI engines, took home the male best dressed prize—April Lamb won the female contest for her Minnesota Vikings pride. Although he didn’t bring his boat this year, Allen had a great time running in his friend Ken Leipper’s Mach 26.

“This year’s regatta was a blast,” said Allen, who has attended every regatta. “I think moving the event date back like DCB did a couple of years ago has made it more enjoyable since it’s not incredibly hot. Adding the party themes has made it fun as well. The DCB club is like a family so it’s like a big reunion each year.”

Owners of Stacked Deck One-Six—an F32 with a pair of 1,200-hp engines from Teague Custom Marine —the Teague family kept it simple by sporting their Team AMSOIL offshore race team jerseys during the banquet. Engine builder and industry icon Bob Teague throttles the Team AMSOIL Skater. His wife, Andrea, and kids, Cherilyn and John, make quite the team in the office and on the water. Regular regatta attendees, the Teagues enjoyed themselves as usual.

Cherilyn Teague was impressed with the variety of boats—old and new—covering the entire DCB lineup. She said the prizes also stood out. From the 47-inch TV and Macbook laptop to the iPads and product from regatta sponsors, the giveaways were more impressive than ever.

Arguably one of the most stunning DCB models of the event was the deep-blue M31 Widebody with twin turbocharged Mercury Racing 1100 engines owned by Brad Macaulay of Kelowna, British Columbia. Macaulay made the 3,600-mile roundtrip from Canada for his first DCB Regatta.

“The event was great—it was definitely worth the drive,” said Macaulay, who owned three boats from Howard Custom Boats before getting the M31 this year. “I had a ton of fun with all the folks from DCB and the other DCB owners. I’ve got to give a special thanks to Rob Blair, Tony Chiaramonte and Paul Miller, and Dave and the entire crew of course, for showing me such a good time.”

DCB Gearing up for Monster Bash Poker Run

For the fourth year in a row, Dave’s Custom Boats owners and company representatives will join the fun at the Monster Bash Poker Run in Lake Havasu City, Ariz., for a few days after Halloween (Nov. 1-3).

See our Photo Gallery from the Poker Run here!

Presented by LakeRacer and Teague Custom Marine, the Monster Bash Poker Run seems to get better each year and we’re expecting nothing less from Thursday night’s open house reception, Friday’s fun run and welcome party, and Saturday’s five-stop poker run, which is followed by the always-entertaining costume cocktail party.

Taking place at the Nautical Beachfront Resort,  the event supports the Lake Havasu Food Bank, with a percentage of the poker run jackpot being donated along with participant nonperishable food donations.

Attending the Monster Bash Poker Run for the first time is Steve Ossakow, who lives in Canton, Ohio but keeps his M35 with twin Mercury Racing  1350 engines in Havasu at the Island Storage & Marine and Islander RV Resort. Ossakow said he’s excited to make the trip out to Havasu in what should be a beautiful time of year.

“I can’t wait to use my boat again,” said Ossakow, who traded in his F32 with twin Mercury HP700SCi engines for the M35 (the silver and blue one featured at the Miami International Boat Show). “We had engine problems our last time out, but they’ve since been sent back to Mercury Racing and rebuilt just in time for the poker run. I have to thank my dealer, Dave Hardgrove of North Coast Performance Marine , for all of his help, as well as the folks at the Islander. They offer great service and take good care of my boat.”

In 2009, Lake Racer’s Jim Nichols started the Monster Bash Poker Run to encourage boaters who may feel like the Desert Storm Poker Run no longer accommodates their boat. The event is limited to boats 35 feet and under with special invitation to larger boats who provide support for Lake Racer events. We hope to see you there.

InsideOut: An “M” Series Trifecta

With a stronger emphasis on the DCB website, one of the things we’ll be doing is posting updates on the happenings from inside and out of the shop. So, for the very first post in the “InsideOut” column, it’s fitting to begin with the stunning M41 Widebody.

You’ve probably seen the photos of the 41-foot catamaran coming together from the tooling to the molds to the pre-rigging phase, now here’s a look at we’ve been up to with the showpiece. The photo below

shows the fully capped boat ready for its turbocharged Mercury Racing 1350 engines. And the remaining photos provide snippets of the engines, drives, hardware and interior on the boat, which features Class-A Surfacing technology.

DCB’s next new model—the M29 Widebody—is coming along nicely as the plug is currently being set up for production on the fourth boat in the popular M Series. Although it’s still a work in progress, the photos included give you a closer look at the tooling progress.

We’ve also got two M31 Widebody models in the works, one with a pair of Mercury Racing HP700SCi engines and another with twin Mercury 1350s. We recently finished the capping on the colorful blue boat with the 700s to create a seamless appearance.

It takes roughly a full week to cap and blend the gelcoat colors on our 31-footer, although the complete color-sanding process and transom finish work adds a few weeks on top of that.

The M31 with the 1350s is now in the spray booth getting its radical orange, black and silver graphics. The photos of this boat show the boat being taped off for the gelcoat application as well as the silver gelcoat being sprayed and the double carbon-fiber/Kevlar layer being laid down. In one of the images, you can see the rendering of what the boat is going to look like once it’s finished.

InsideOut: Almost Time to Unwrap the New M29

For this, the second edition of DCB’s new “InsideOut” column, let us first wish everyone Happy Holidays. We’ve had a busy few weeks since Thanksgiving, including applying the tooling gelcoat to the new M29 Widebody.

m29-1020

m29-1096After finishing the tooling, waxing it and applying the tooling gelcoat, it’s time to complete the deck mold for the 29-foot catamaran. The lamination process takes about a week to complete as three ounces of fiberglass mat are applied each day, followed by an infusion of another 15 ounces. With the mold caging complete, the deck mold should be popped this week. The gelcoat application will start for hull No. 1 soon after that. It won’t be long until the twin Mercury Racing OptiMax 300XS-powered M29 will be on the water. The second model will feature twin Mercury 565 engines.

Things are moving along nicely for the M41 Widebody as well. Just last week, Lugo Manufacturing stopped by to test fit the tilt trailer. lugo-m41-0146Watching the beautiful 41-footer go up on its side was a little unnerving especially since it was the first DCB to be on a tilt trailer, but it had to be done to make sure the bunks and everything else were 100 percent. The trailer is back at Lugo for a couple of tweaks and from there it will be torn down, sandblasted and painted silver and charcoal to match the boat.

m41-0020The rigging is nearly complete for the M41 Widebody; in fact, as soon as the tailpipes and a couple of minor accessories arrive, we should be all set. Ideally the boat will be water-test ready before the end of the year. Soon enough it’ll be time to haul the boat to Florida for the Miami International Boat Show in February. Expectations are high for the 41-footer and there’s no doubt it’s up to the challenge. Even such things as the convenient switch buttons for the gull-wing-style engine hatches are trick in the M41.

m41-0046

And here’s a quick update on the two M31 Widebody models that are moving through the shop. The vibrant blue and gray 31-footer is on its way to be rigged with a pair of Mercury HP700SCi engines.

bluem31-0228

The interior and windshield for the boat will be completed at the same time.

The hull for the other M31, which will be powered by twin turbocharged Mercury 1350 engines, was recently popped from the mold.

orangem31-0943

Since then, it has been flipped over for blueprinting, the process that includes making sure there aren’t any inconsistencies on the running surface.

First Test. . . M41 Widebody

Written by: Jason Johnson – Speed on the Water

After a full year of building the highly anticipated M41 Widebody, Dave’s Custom Boats (DCB) dipped the boat in the water for the first time on Friday afternoon at San Diego’s J Street Marina. Company founder Dave Hemmingson e-mailed a handful of images this evening after a few hours of running the 41-foot catamaran in the bay and out in the Pacific Ocean. Needless to say, he was ecstatic.

After a day of testing the new M41 Widebody, the energy level at Dave’s Custom Boats is out of this world. Calling the M41 Widebody an “absolute home run,” Hemmingson said the boat, which is powered by twin Mercury Racing 1350 engines, reached a top speed of 170 mph around 6,200 rpm during the first day of testing. He added that the catamaran “has lots left in her” since they didn’t want to push the boat too hard its first time out.

DCB’s Tony Chiaramonte said he’s never been in a boat that was so amazing right off the trailer.

“Seriously this boat is rock-solid at any speed—it’s so nice,” Chiaramonte said. “We ran it up to 170.4 mph with a pair of Mercury Racing 17”x41” propellers turning in. We tried a couple of props, but we were really out there to get a feeling for what the boat can do. There were some 3- to 4-footers and good crosswind in the ocean today, and it handled all of it perfectly.”

Chiaramonte said DCB will be taking the boat to Arizona’s Lake Havasu in the next couple of weeks to dial it in more and turn it over to its proud owner, Win Farnsworth.

Second M41 from DCB Sets Off on Poker Run Tour

$
0
0

dcbm41 red leadPowered by a pair of Mercury Racing 1350 engines, the second M41 Widebody from DCB left the company’s Southern California factory for Canada yesterday.

In contrast to the first M41 Widebody catamaran from Dave’s Custom Boats (DCB)—Win Farnsworth’s remarkable Silver Lining—the second 100-percent carbon epoxy 41-footer rolled away from the company’s El Cajon, Calif., factory on another similarly stunning tilt trailer from Lugo Manufacturing.

“The first one has the classy elegant silver look and the new one has this hot-rod, Ferrari-red look,” said Dave Hemmingson, who started DCB more than 20 years ago. “She looks beautiful, doesn’t she? I honestly don’t know how we can build a finer boat. Taking them to this degree of fit and finish is quite a process.”

dcbm41 red trailer
dcbm41 red transom

Hemmingson said the boat is on its way to Canada’s Shuswap Lake in British Columbia. DCB owner Rob Blair, who lives in Alberta, Calgary, will be using the boat on his local lake and participating in Sunday’s (Aug. 4) Hot Dogs/Hot Boats Day, a customer appreciation fun run hosted by Performance Marine in Vernon, with about a dozen other DCB owners and 30 or 40 more performance boaters.

From there the boat will be trailered south for the Big Cat Poker Run (Aug. 16-17) in Northern California. Then begins the journey east as the DCB crew will set off for Missouri for the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout (Aug. 24-25) and Kentucky for the Lake Cumberland Poker Run (Sept. 6-8).

Although powering the M41 with twin Mercury Racing 1650 Race engines was discussed, Hemmingson said they opted to go with a pair of Mercury 1350s since the boat will be used for many demo rides throughout the summer. It helps that you can fill up the 91-octane-fueled 1350s on the water—the 1650s require 112-octane fuel—and that the 1350s have a one-year warranty.

“We’re very excited to show off the new M41—there are several guys itching to see it and take a ride,” said Blair, who happened to be at the Performance Marine shop with owners Jim and Dana Anderson today. “We’ll have the boat up here all next week and then we’ll be back in California with it. We’re excited to have a boat we’ll be able to run and take to events this year.

“Win (Farnsworth) was gracious enough to buy the first M41 and let us impose on him to promote the boat,” Blair added. “I can hardly wait to get my hands on the new one. The guys at the shop have gone over the top in typical fashion for Dave Hemmingson and his team.”

Editor’s note: Look for coverage of the Hot Dogs/Hot Boats Day on speedonthewater.com next week.
